By Markos Papadatos     Mar 17, 2013 in Entertainment
Five country duos are in the running for the Academy of Country Music (ACM) award for “Top Vocal Duo” of 2013. These nominated acts include Big & Rich, Florida Georgia Line, Love and Theft, Sugarland, as well as Thompson Square.
For Sugarland, their nomination in this category is their reward since this year was low-key for Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush. Big & Rich had a Top 20 hit with “That’s Why I Pray,” but that will not be enough to guarantee them a win.
Last year’s ACM award-winning duo, Thompson Square, scored two hit singles on country radio, where “Glass” peaked in the Top 15 and “If I Didn’t Have You” reached the Top 10. Their chances to repeat their win this year are much more difficult especially since they are up against such musical acts as Love and Theft and Florida Georgia Line.
Love and Theft’s “Angel Eyes” went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Charts (for the week ending August 25, 2012) and it has been certified gold. Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” was ubiquitous and it peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Charts for five nonconsecutive weeks (it even dethroned Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” out of the top spot).
Most recently, Florida Georgia Line bested out Love and Theft for the win in the “Top New Vocal Duo” category (which were handed out prior to the ACM ceremony), which makes them the front-runners for the win in this category.
Tune in on CBS on April 7, 2013 to see if Florida Georgia Line, Thompson Square or Love and Theft will take home the ACM award for “Top Vocal Duo of the Year.”
