article imageLizzie Marie Likness: How to start a cooking empire at age 6

By Raluca Besliu     Mar 16, 2013 in Politics
13-year-old Lizzie Marie Likness is the founder of Lizzie Marie Cuisine, a successful website started when she was 6 years-old, which features videos, recipes and blogs to help kids eat and live healthier and discover that cooking can be fun.
Lizzie Marie started helping her mom in the kitchen when 2 years old. The teenager recalls: "My mom and grandmother taught me how to cook. My mom would take me into the kitchen and put me on the counter, and I’d be her taste tester. If she was making soup or apple sauce, I’d stir the pot, add spices."
When she was six-years-old, Lizzie Marie decided that she would pay for the horseback riding lessons that she wanted to take all by herself, by selling homemade baked goods at a local farmers market. This is how she discovered that she enjoyed sharing her passion for healthy cooking with other people and seeing their impressed and pleased surprise when finding out that her food was both delicious and healthy.
She then asked her dad to design the Lizzie Marie Cuisine website for her, where she still continues to post videos of her cooking healthy foods. Her website brought her many opportunities. It enabled her to become a spokesperson for the American Heart Association speaking at events for their Go Red for Women campaign. At the same time, it allowed her to work with the NFL Atlanta Falcons for their First Down for Fitness program, which teaches elementary students the importance of eating healthy and exercising.
Lizzie even appeared on the Rachael Ray show as a finalist for the Kindness Challenge, aimed at demonstrating that you are never too young to do what you are passionate about. Lizzie Marie has also filmed a series of 12 online cooking videos for WebMD, called "Healthy Cooking with Chef Lizzie," where she presented her own recipes in a fun, engaging way for both kids and parents. While she has already achieved a lot, Lizzie has still bigger plans for the near future. The young entrepreneur intends to launch a healthy-cooking cookbook, packaged food products as well as a cookware line.
For Lizzie, the key to starting a successful business is being passionate and having good communication skills. The teenager runs Lizzie Marie Cuisine alongside her parents and her manager. In order to get the funding that she needed, mostly to buy ingredients and supplies for cooking classes that she was locally teaching and for buying a business licence, she applied for grants, because she didn't want to keep borrowing money from her parents.
While later on in the future, Lizzie Marie says she intends to go to college, she would also like, at some point in her life, to have her own TV show and make Lizzie Marie Cuisine a household name. When advising other kid entrepreneurs, Lizzie Marie emphasized: "You should just do what you love, whatever it may be, even if you aren't sure you can do it now. People always ask, "What do you want to do when you grow up?" I don’t think you should wait until you grow up. I say, "I already have my own business. Hopefully, I’ll have a TV show when I grow up." I think doing what you love is the biggest part. Don’t be afraid to do what you love." She concluded: ''The greatest reward is doing what you love for the good of others.''
