article image'Strike Debt' Occupy Group Takes Action Against Unfair Debt

By Victoria N. Alexander     Mar 12, 2013 in Politics
New York - Strike Debt is an offshoot of Occupy Wall Street that is trying to build popular resistance to all forms of unfairly imposed debt. They will be sponsoring a week of action and education March 16-23th, culminating in an event in New York on March 23rd.
Part of the Strike Debt effort includes "The Rolling Jubilee" fund which buys medical debt for pennies on the dollar from debt brokers and abolishes the debt for the debt holder. Last November some lucky people received this holiday message in the mail:
“We write with good news: the above referenced account has been purchased by the Rolling Jubilee Fund, a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization. The Rolling Jubilee Fund is a project of Strike Debt. The mission of this project is to buy and abolish personal debt. We believe that no one should have to go into debt for the basic things in our lives, like healthcare, housing, and education. You no longer owe the balance of this debt. It is gone, a gift with no strings attached. You are no longer any obligation to settle this account with the original creditor, the bill collector, or anyone else.”
Strike Debt reports that they have purchased and abolished another large amount of medical debt, and they will release the details in mid-March, to kick off a week of nationwide protest against unfair debt. The group describes its efforts as "a campaign of mutual support, good will, and collective refusal." They also offer a Debt Resistors' Operations Manual (PDF), which is
"written by an anonymous collective of resistors, defaulters, and allies from Strike Debt and Occupy Wall Street—aims to provide specific tactics for understanding and fighting against the debt system. You'll find detailed strategies and resources for dealing with credit card, medical, student, housing and municipal debt, tactics for navigating the pitfalls of personal bankruptcy, and information to help protect yourself from predatory lenders. Recognizing that individually we can only do so much to resist the system of debt, the manual also introduces ideas for those who have made the decision to take collective action."
Details about various protests and actions, around the US and in New York, can be found on StrikeDebt.org and Strike Debt Facebook page. Details for the 23rd event in New York City have not yet been released.
