Chicago father, baby, shot while he was changing her diaper

By Arthur Weinreb     Mar 12, 2013 in Crime
Chicago - The six-month-old and her father were shot multiple times as he was changing his daughter's diaper in a minivan on a street in Chicago's South Side.
UPDATE: It is now being reported that Jonylah has died.
The drive-by shooting occurred yesterday just before 1 p.m. in the Woodlawn neighbourhood of Chicago. Johnathan Watkins, 25, was standing just outside the open front passenger door of his minivan. His six-month-old daughter, Jonylah Watkins, was lying on the front seat while her dad was changing her diaper.
Shots rang out. While police initially reported Jonylah was shot once or twice, the baby's family says she was shot five times and sustained injuries to her lung, liver, leg, shoulder and bowel or intestine. Watkins sustained injuries to his left side and right buttock. A bullet also grazed his face.
The infant was rushed to Comer Children's Hospital and underwent hours of surgery. Her father was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The Chicago Tribune reports as of last night, Jonylah was listed in critical condition and the condition of Watkins was stated to be serious-to-critical.
According to police, Watkins had his back to an alley when he was changing Jonylah's diaper. The shooter emerged from the alley, fired several shots and then went back through the alley. He was last seen fleeing the area in a blue conversion van.
Violence is not unknown to the family. Jonylah's mother, Judy Watkins, 20, who learned of the shooting after finishing her shift at McDonalds, was shot in the knee when she was eight months pregnant with Jonylah. She was walking home from a store with several other women when someone opened fire. No arrests were made in that case.
Police believe Watkins is a gang-banger and yesterday's shooting might have been gang related. When questions of his gang ties were put to Rev. Corey Brooks who is acting as a spokesman for the family, he said, "We're dealing with a family man with a wife and a child. We have no idea about any gang-banging."
Several members of Watkins' family were close enough to hear the shots. While the neighbourhood is known for shootings and gang activities, everyone was shocked at the fact a six-month-old baby could be shot. Brook's church, New Beginnings Church of Chicago, has offered a $5,000 reward to anyone who provides information to police that leads to an arrest.
At the time of this writing, no arrests have been made.
