article imagePETA urges Starcraft fans, 'Zerglings have feelings too'

Irvine - As the long awaited next instalment of the video game Starcraft II entitled “Heart of the Swarm” was officially launched worldwide at 12 midnight last night, animal rights campaigning group PETA took a novel approach to publicising their cause.
Blizzard Entertainment officially launched Starcraft II – Heart of the Swarm last night as a sequel to their much acclaimed sci-fi strategy game Starcraft II — Wings of Liberty. There were launch events at game stores across the globe but at one launch in Irvine, California, animal rights campaigning group PETA — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals — took the opportunity to remind gamers more used to annihilating seemingly endless swarming hordes of Zerg that “Zerglings have feelings too”.
PETA are strident in their campaigns for animal rights of all kinds but, clearly, PETA membership is not a gamer-free zone. Entering into the spirit of Blizzard’s launch of “Heart of the Swarm,” PETA said it was renaming itself "Terrans for the Ethical Treatment of Zerglings" and would be distributing new leaflets entitled “Zerglings Have Feelings, Too” at the Irvine, Ca. launch event.
The spoof leaflets were intended to urge gamers and non-gamers alike to have compassion for all beings — even ones that are very different from us humans.
Under the banner headline urging compassion for the sometimes sleekit but never cow'rin or tim'rous Zergling — as anyone who’s ever played Starcraft knows the Zerg are more likely to cause panic in the breasties of gamers — runs the play on words “Heart for the Swarm”.
As PETA contributor, Joel Bartlett put it, writing on the PETA website, “...while Zerglings are not real, there are many equally "strange" and exotic animals we share this planet with who deserve our empathy. Just because crocodiles and snakes look alien to us, that doesn't make it OK to skin them alive for a handbag, shoes, or a belt.”
