article imageAhmadinejad's embrace of Chavez's mother garners him flak

By Paul Iddon     Mar 11, 2013 in World
Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been criticized by clerical religious authorities in his country for embracing Hugo Chavez's grieving mother at his funeral.
Mr. Ahmadinejad was seen hugging the grieving 78-year-old Elena Frias de Chavez during the state funeral of Hugo Chavez. Ahmadinejad had been a friend and political ally of Chavez so was saddened by his loss.
As par Islamic law Muslim men are forbidden to touch women who are not of close relations. Not only in the eyes of the conservative clerical establishment of Iran had Ahmadinejad sinned as a Muslim, but he had acted highly inappropriately as the supposed representative of what they see as an Islamic state. This controversial embrace came after he in recent days controversially proclaimed that he believes that Mr. Chavez will return along with Jesus Christ and the revered Hidden Imam of Shia Islam. (Reuters, March 8 2013)
