Mysterious notes left on Manassas resident doorsteps

By Leigh Goessl     Mar 10, 2013 in Crime
Manassas - Over the last couple of months, a mystery has emerged in Manassas, Virginia. An individual has been leaving threatening notes on the doorsteps of several homeowners.
Manassas residents were shocked to find notes left on their doorsteps containing threats to kill. The first notes appeared in December 2012 and three additional notes were found this past week, according to WJLA News.
What is odd is that each note contains a local resident's name, but it is not someone in the public eye. The unknown person leaving the notes tends to ring bells or knock on doors, breaks lawn ornaments or doors, then leaves the note and takes off.
No home has been targeted more than once.
Manassas police have been collecting the mysterious handwritten letters and say whoever is behind the notes is including another individual's identity, who lives in another area of Prince William County.
The man the letters mention, which include an address, has no criminal history or other indicators that would point to a motive as to why someone would use his identity in the threatening notes.
"We've made contact with the person who's listed in the notes and he doesn't have any information at this point that indicates who this might be," Police spokesman Lowell Nevill said back in December, according to WTOP News.
In all, close to 20 different homeowners have gotten the threatening notes. According to WJLA, "each reads a little differently, but all threaten to kill."
In a more recent article, WTOP reported that police say there is a lack of grammatical correctness and the notes contain spelling errors.
"We're not talking about long treatises. We're talking about 15 to 20 words," Nevill said.
Police do not have a suspect or a motive at this time, but a few witnesses have come forward.
Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to call police at 703-257-8092 or Crime Solvers at 703-330-0330.
