The past two years have been amazing for country duo Love and Theft. They have garnered nominations for such prestigious awards from the Country Music Association (CMA), Academy of Country Music (ACM), American Country Awards (ACA), among many others.
The duo is comprised of Eric Gunderson and Stephen Barker Liles and they are signed to RCA Records Nashville. On March 8, 2013, Stephen chatted via telephone with Digital Journal about Love and Theft’s Academy of Country Music (ACM) nomination for “Vocal Duo of the Year,” their new single and their upcoming tour with country mega-star Tim McGraw.
The duo has shared the stage with such artists as Brad Paisley, Jake Owen, Florida Georgia Line and they will embark with Tim McGraw on his “Two Lanes of Freedom Tour” which begins in May of 2013. “We toured with Tim and Lady Antebellum three summers ago. We are pleasantly surprised that he invited us back. He treats us really well. Brantley Gilbert will be a great addition to the show. It’s going to be a really fun show,” he said.
Their hit single “Angel Eyes” reached the top of the Billboard Hot Country Airplay Charts (for the week ending August 25, 2012) and it has been certified gold. “This feels awesome and it was one of the goals that we had set for ourselves. It was really cool and it solidifies what we are doing now,” Stephen said.
Their current radio single “Runnin’ Out of Air” sits at No. 35 on the Billboard Hot Country Airplay Charts. “We are really excited about this song. We wanted to cut it since the first time that we heard it. Hopefully it will break into the Top 20 and it will climb up faster,” he stated.
On April 7, 2013, the Academy of Country Music (ACM) awards are expected to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and they are nominated for “Top Vocal Duo of the Year,” where they join fellow nominees Florida Georgia Line, Thompson Square, Big & Rich, as well as Sugarland. “It’s a big honor to be nominated for an Academy of Country Music award since it is voted by peers, venue owners, artists, and labels. It’s nice to be up for that. We definitely do not take this for granted at all,” he said. “We have known the Florida Georgia Line guys before they were even together, so it’s cool to see them doing well. I am really happy for them. They are great guys,” he added.
The duo will be playing shows next week in New South Waves, Australia as part of the “CMC Rocks the Hunter Festival.”
Stephen noted that one of Love and Theft’s biggest passions involves songwriting. “We are writing as much as we can and we are working on our next album, so we will have more songs to pick from which is exciting. We also have Chase Rice and Canaan Smith playing shows with us,” he said.
He listed Lee Ann Womack as the female country artist that Love and Theft would love to someday sing with. “I love Lee Ann! She has a great voice that is very soothing and she is a sweetheart. There is something about her that I have always loved. A song with her would have a really classic and timeless feel,” he said.
Stephen defines the word success as “doing what you love and what you are passionate about,” as well as “being able to pay the bills and being happy.”
