article imageGreece: Golden Dawn's Ilias Kasidiaris acquitted in court

By Katerina Nikolas     Mar 7, 2013 in World
Athens - Ilias Kasidiaris, Golden Dawn MP, was acquitted in the Athens' court on Thursday over charges which have dogged him since 2007. He gave a rousing speech as he left court surrounded by Chrysi Avgi supporters.
Speaking outside the court Kasidiaris said (Translation from video):
"Until today your insulting television channels have said I was a thief, a knife-wielder and a criminal. From the first moment I have said I was innocent, today justice has said I am innocent.
I am rubbing this decision in the faces of the media and sad politicians. I have a lot of opposition that today would like me to be in jail and a lot of people who want Chrysi Avgi to be on the sidelines, but we are here, we are very powerful and soon we will be dominant."
Kasidiaris was charged with involvement on an attack on a student in 2007. Following his election to parliament in 2012 Digital Journal reported Kasidiaris requested that his parliamentary immunity from prosecution be lifted so he could stand trial and clear his name.
To Vima reported that following his acquittal the prosecutors requested a further waiving of parliamentary immunity so Kasidiaris can face charges of assault against Communist party MP (KKE) Liana Kanelli. The televised assault brought Kasidiaris to international attention.
