Birmingham - A 16-year-old girl was stabbed to death on a bus at 7.30 this morning in an apparently random attack. In the last few minutes, police announced an arrest.
This has been the big story in the UK this morning, overshadowing the Prime Minister's latest pronouncements on the economy. There have been regular updates on BBC TV news programmes. At around 7.30am, a 16-year-old girl on her way to school in Birmingham was attacked and stabbed in an apparently motiveless, random attack by a man, identified as a black male who was carrying a small white bag. He may have had a bandaged hand.
Police were called at 7.37, when the emergency services arrived at the scene they attempted to revive her, but to no avail.
The victim has now been identified as Christina Edkins. At around 1.20 this afternoon, it was announced that a 22-year-old man fitting the description of the attacker had been detained nearby after being seen to act suspiciously.
