article imageCroatian President Josipovic visits Split as GAST 2013 opens

Split - The 18th International Food and Beverage Fair, GAST 2013, has opened in Split, and its opening day was accompanied by a presidential visit.
Billed as the most significant gastro event in Croatia, GAST 2013 opened its doors on March 6, 2013, for the 18th International Food and Beverage fair, an event visited by Digital Journal. Among the early visitors was Croatian President Ivo Josipovic.
Located on the shore of the Adriatic in Znjan in Split, GAST is one of the region's more important hospitality fairs, and there was a wide range of stands from all over Croatia and abroad presenting products for all aspects of the hospitality industry.
With Croatia's growing gastronomic reputation, there were plenty of quality local food and beverage producers on show, including the Bastijana winery from Jelsa on the island of Hvar.
There has been a marked increase in Polish tourists coming to Croatia in recent years, a trend which is set to continue with the announcement of several new direct flights to Split from Poland for the 2013 season. The Polish Embassy in Zagreb is working hard to promote Polish products in Croatia, and this was their third appearance at GAST.
One of the new additions to the hospitality scene is the requirement by law for fiscal cash registers for each cafe and restaurant in the country. The huge and sudden demand for the technology has led to some very competitive businesses getting in on the act, with Tomislav 1994 - one of the country's leading software solution providers - having a stand and also receiving an award as Digital Journal's camera happened to be passing.
While the majority of the stands were hospitality-related, it was also a chance for organisations such as the Croatian Police Force to interact with the public via their own stand.
For sheer energy and enthusiasm, it was hard to beet the ladies from Nano Wellness, however, as they proved to be one of the most popular spots in the whole fair, as they freely dispensed massage demonstrations to all passers by.
GAST 2013 runs until March 10.
