article imagePetition against hunting delivered to NSW State Parliament Special

By Richard Milnes     Mar 7, 2013 in Politics
Sydney - Campaigners against hunting in national parks handed in a petition at the NSW parliament today with over 10,000 signatures.
Those present included Luke Foley, Shadow Minister for the Environment (ALP), Cate Faehrmann, MLC for the Greens and Alex Greenwich, Member for Sydney (Independent).
Independent MP for Sydney, Alex Greenwich believed that “Hunting in national parks serves no conservation value whatsoever.”
“I think there is widespread community outrage.” He said.
In response to a question from the media he explained that signatures had come from “all over the State.”
Luke Foley, Shadow Minister for the Environment, addressed the media saying, “Mr O’Farrell has been forced to suspend amateur hunting in national parks, but he should end it completely.”
He spoke about the public safety risks of introducing amateur hunters highlighted by the government’s own risk assessment.
“So the government should take heed of their own expert advisers and cancel, once and for all, amateur hunting in national parks.” He said.
In response to a question from the media as to why the petition would make a difference he explained “I think community opposition to amateur hunting in national parks has led to repeated delays in the government proceeding with it and now a suspension. So this petition with more than 10,000 signatures will increase the pressure and that pressure will only be released when there is a complete end, rather than a temporary suspension, to amateur hunters in our national parks.”
Kevin Evans CEO of the National Parks Association NSW mentioned that in addition to the more than 10,000 signatures handed in to parliament about another 100,000 people had signed online petitions.
Cate Faehrmann of the Greens described the plan to allow recreational hunting as a “dodgy deal between the Shooters Party and the government.”
