New research data released by NASA shows a map of ocean salinity changes that are tracked by satellite Aquarius. The project will last three years and this is the first year of data being published.
The saltiest of seas, particularly the Dead Sea are known to be an attraction in the European Mediterranean but to get a bigger picture; space exploring satellites have the answer.
On board the Aquarius satellite, NASA has been tracking the saltiest seas. Using digital imaging they are able to show a map of the saltiest seas.
They have been using the satellite Aquarius to track since December 2011 and have released the data from 2011 to December 2012. This is the first year of such data from Aquarius being released.
The data has showed that ocean salinity is shifting and with global climate change this trend will continue.
With a bit more than a year of data, we are seeing some surprising patterns, especially in the tropics," said Aquarius Principal Investigator Gary Lagerloef, of Earth & Space Research in Seattle. "We see features evolve rapidly over time.
The project is expected to continue for another 2 years. NASA will continue to gather information on the ocean’s salinity and patterns of change. Though an initial 3 year project, the project could continue further.
At the end of the project NASA hope to have gathered enough data to better understand the ocean’s effect on weather, climate change and to learn of any new insights salinity measurements can give them.
The first year of the Aquarius mission has mostly been about understanding how the instruments and algorithms are performing," Gene Carl Feldman said. Aquarius project manager at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "Now that we have overcome the major hurdles, we can really begin to focus on understanding what the data are telling us about how the ocean works, how it affects weather and climate, and what new insights we can gain by having these remarkable salinity measurements.
