article imageUK to provide Syrian opposition with armored vehicles

By Paul Iddon     Mar 6, 2013 in World
According to the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom William Hague his country will provide armored vehicles and body armor to Syrian rebels under the pretext of helping to "save lives" in that country.
The millions of pounds of "non-lethal" hardware it is set to give the rebels will include communication along with search and rescue equipment. Hague stressed that this is a "necessary, proportionate and lawful" thing for his country to do in response to the "extreme human suffering" that is continuing to transpire in Syria which has left 70,000 people dead, two million displaced and another million refugees in their neighboring countries. Hague accordingly stresses that the Syrian people are in "dire need" of assistance and his country simply cannot "look the other way" as the situation deteriorates.
The £13 million package of humanitarian and logistical supplies is to be dropped into areas under rebel control across the country. It will be possible to do this under terms of the arms embargo the EU has enforced on Syria since it stipulates that a broad range of non-lethal assistance is permitted.
