article imagePhoto Essay: Duden Waterfalls in Turkey Special

By Lonna Lisa Williams     Mar 6, 2013 in World
Antalya - At Duden Waterfalls near Antalya, Turkey, you can walk in a circle all around the flowing water. Cross bridges, linger near the misty cascade, climb through the cave behind it, and sit above the river where water crashes down a high, tree-ringed ravine.
Duden Waterfalls actually consists of two waterfalls along the Duden River in Southern Anatolia. The Upper Falls, where I visited, is the dramatic center of a nature park surrounding a natural ravine. The Lower Falls cascades off a cliff a few miles downstream, into the Mediterranean Sea.
You can take a short bus ride from Antalya city center to Upper Duden Falls. When you arrive, you pay a small fee to enter the gated nature park that surrounds the falls. Following steps down the side of a ravine (don't worry; they come with hand rails), you see smaller waterfalls twining among trees, moss, and ferns. Crossing a footbridge over Duden River, you walk along the further banks among huge stones where you can sit, have a picnic, and admire the fifty-foot waterfall and its basin. You may see a man holding a large parrot. He works at the park and will take a photo of you (which you can purchase on your way out). Don't be surprised if he suddenly places a macaw on your shoulder to brighten that photograph.
At a railing near the main cascade, you can lean over the clear, swirling water and let mist fill your lungs as you listen to the river's roar. Sure-footed visitors climb into rocky caves behind the rail, and the path slopes upward into the main cave behind the waterfall. Inside the cave, you can look out at Duden River. You can even sit directly behind the waterfall, pose for a photo, and stare through the flowing liquid.
Steps lead up through the roof of the cave to the plateau above the waterfall where sunlight shines on a grassy park. You can pet animals, buy handmade Turkish crafts, or sit at one of several cafes and enjoy a cup of tea with biscuits. One cafe is located right next to the cresting river top that falls over its rocky cliff to the basin below. You can sit by the railed edge and think how time is like the water ever-flowing past you.
In Turkish, "waterfall" is "şelale" (pronounced "sheylaley"). Of all my walks in Turkey, Düden Şelale was one of my favorite. After exploring this place, you will understand the anatomy and soul of a waterfall.
