The FBI looked into a $250,000 extortion attempt shortly after Whitney Houston’s marriage to singer Bobby Brown in 1992. The harasser threatened to make Houston’s private life public information - unless Houston paid. Houston told the FBI that the extortionist was someone she considered a friend, according to an FBI interview.
Some of the threats Houston received were from infatuated fans, some making outlandish claims. One fan wrote love stating that he "might hurt someone with some crazy idea." Another fan told the FBI in an interview that he had helped Nelson Mandela win the elections in South Africa, had purchased Brazil for $66 billion, and was the “President of Europe.”
