Savannah - At Savannah's first 'First Saturday on the River' event for 2013, River Street was filled with vendor booths and entertainers with Piggly Wiggly's Mr. Pig, zombies, and Fang joining the festivities to support diabetes awareness campaign.
Savannah hosts First Friday & Saturday on the River events and the first for 2013 occurred March 1-2. On Saturday, Digital Journal arrived on the scene at River Street to find crowds enjoying arts and crafts, entertainment, and family fun of all sorts.
First Friday & Saturday on the River [PDF] activities are offered beginning in March and ending in November. At the March event vendor booths lined River Street, which borders the Savannah River. Visitors to River Street could purchase many items including beautiful paintings and balloon animals.

As it turns out, the zombie invasion kicked-off the 21st Annual Kiss-A-Pig Campaign sponsored by the Southeast Georgia & Coastal Carolina chapter of the American Diabetes Association. This year's fundraising campaign is called “Diabetes Bites: Sink Your Teeth Into a Cure.”
Dr. Scott Cohen, of the Cohen Dental Center and this year’s Southeast Georgia ADA campaign chair, told Savannah Morning News, “The theme this year is vampires and zombies because diabetes is a scary thing. Vampires and zombies are very popular this year and we’re going to take a bite out of diabetes."
Zombies were available to provide zombie make-up/face painting for a $5 donation with all proceeds benefiting the ADA Kiss-a-Pig Campaign.

As the Kiss-a-Pig Campaign notes, "This year's campaign is presented by Piggly Wiggly" and the reason to kiss a pig is due to the fact that "Insulin originally came from the pancreas of a pig. Therefore, we 'Kiss-a-Pig' for helping us save lives."
That is why it was not only especially appropriate to see a large pig, named Mr. Pig, representing Piggly Wiggly at the event, but also appropriate to see Mr. Pig embracing a zombie.

The Kiss-a-Pig Campaign states that "Unmanaged diabetes has SCARY consequences!" and reminds everyone that "Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, lower limb amputations and kidney failure and can lead to an early death. Yet people don't fear diabetes and don't think it's serious. Through this year's Kiss-a-Pig 'horror' theme, we hope to draw attention to the seriousness of this disease and the importance of managing diabetes to prevent devastating complications."
