article imageHoward Stern surprised by choice of Mel B as new 'AGT' judge

By Elizabeth Brown     Mar 1, 2013 in Entertainment
New York - Howard Stern admitted Monday that he was initially taken aback by the choice of Mel B aka "Scary Spice" as the new judge of "America's Got Talent".
The Howard Stern Show was on vacation when NBC announced their choice of Mel B as the official replacement for Sharon Osbourne on February 21, but Stern weighed in on the news as soon as he returned to the air live. While Mel B says she's "thrilled" to be working with Howard and Howie Mandel, Stern told his satellite radio listeners that he was less than thrilled when he heard the news.
“At first I was kind of like, eh?" said Stern on Monday's Sirius XM broadcast. "What kind of choice is that? Mel B? Scary Spice? Wasn’t she on “Dancing with the Stars”? And I was just like: ‘Who cares about the Spice Girls? And who cares and who cares?’ And then, I saw piece of tape of her. She’s on ‘X Factor’ in Australia or something and she was pretty good…She seemed to be pretty direct with her opinions. There must be some reason they chose her.”
Stern also told his listeners that he discussed the choice with returning “America’s Got Talent” judge Howie Mandel, who said he didn’t know Mel B at all and had no idea what it would be like to work with her.
Stern certainly offered plenty of alternate suggestions to the network, including his Howard Stern Show co-host Robin Quivers. The King of All Media strongly suggested that "AGT" "go big" in their search for a female voice on the panel, proposing names including Madonna, Cher and Rosie O'Donnell as possible replacements for Sharon Osbourne.
Mel B joined the Australian version of "X Factor" as a judge back in 2011 and acted as a guest judge at the "X Factor UK" auditions in 2012. She also acted as co-host for one season of the Australian version of "Dancing with the Stars".
