article imageThe ambivalence of Britain’s urban foxes

By Alexander Baron     Mar 1, 2013 in Environment
Sydenham - Last month, a fox attack on a baby in Bromley prompted talk of culling the animals. Not everybody takes that view; some even blame us for feeding them.
The shocking attack on baby Denny Dolan made local and national news here early last month. This attack, in Bromley, was the second such attack in Greater London since 2010; the earlier attack was even worse, and but for the mother of the twin girls appearing when she did, both of them could have...best not to think about it.
Some have called for a cull, understandably, others claim this is unnecessary because 80,000 of the animals are killed on our roads every year. This figure is said to be an estimate, so is to be treated with extreme suspicion, but even if it were true it is a non sequitur.
While the debate rages on, one person who will not be joining in on the cull side is fellow Sydenham dweller Chris Johnson, who kindly provided these photographs from his dedicated foxcam.
What does he have to say?
"We feed the foxes because they are a pleasure to see live, they cause us no trouble or mess, and the cats like sitting out when they are visiting and watching them too!"
