article imageMystery ring of radiation briefly encircled Earth

By Owen Weldon     Mar 1, 2013 in Science
Last September most people did not know that a previously unseen ring of radiation encircled the planet for almost an entire month.
According to New Scientist, the radiation ended up being destroyed by an interplanetary shock wave.
According to GlobalPost, particle detection instruments were used on a probe conducted by NASA. The probe mission is known as the Van Allen probe mission.
The new discovery is not the first radiation ring to have encircled the earth. This is the third transient radiation ring that encompasses the planet.
According to Science News, Yuri Shprits of the Univeristy of California, Los Angeles, who was not involved in the study, said that the discovery is a very important one. Shprits said that over half a century after discovering radiation belts, the region of space where most of the satellites operate poses new challenges.
No one really knows the exact causes of what causes such events, but some sources say that it may have something to do with solar activity that interacts with Earths' magnetic field.
