article imageLarge canyon discovered beneath Red Sea

By Owen Weldon     Feb 28, 2013 in Science
The U.K. Royal Navy's HMS Enterprise discovered a canyon more than 800-foot-deep on the floor of the Red Sea, and an echo sounder produced 3D images of the feature.
According to Yahoo, the ship was probing the topography of the Red Sea's bottom as part of a mission to try to understand the waters of the Red Sea west of Suez, Egypt, as well as their safety for shipping and navigation.
According to French Tribune, the commanding officer of the ship said that the features that were revealed in the images may be the result of ancient rivers moving through the rock strata before the Red Sea became flooded.
According to Inquisitr, the HMS Enterprise will stay in the Middle East until summer, and it will continue to update the 3,300-plus or so Admiralty Charts.
The 800+ deep canyon in the Red Sea is large, but it is not the largest in the world. The deepest underwater canyon in the world is located off the coast of Spain, and it drops almost 5,000 miles beneath the surface.
