article imageCalvary Baptist Academy does ‘Harlem Shake’ — Students suspended Special

By Chrystal Mahan     Feb 21, 2013 in Internet
Shreveport - More than thirty-six students were suspended after a “Harlem Shake” video went viral on YouTube. The students involved were baseball players from Calvary Baptist Academy.
On Feb. 15 students reportedly shot the “Harlem Shake” video and posted it to Youtube. The video shows members of the Calvary Baptist Academy baseball team on the school’s baseball field doing their version of the viral hit. Many students were in costume, while others stripped down to different articles of clothing.
KLTV mentions the students were making suggestive gestures. The video clearly shows one student humping another student in a gorilla mask while a third student joins them. On Feb. 20 the up-loader, “cbaharlemshake,”changed the description to add:
“Today, everyone in this video was suspended. Calvary’s a great place, isn’t it?”
The YouTube channel also hosts two other “Harlem Shake” videos; both of which reportedly happened on campus. One video was filmed in English class and the other video involves the school wrestling team in the bathroom.
The “Harlem Shake” is an Internet meme that went viral on YouTube. Users create their own Harlem video and upload it as a reply to the original; allowing for the greatest chance of viral success. The original video was uploaded Feb. 2 by The Sunny Coast Skate group; which consists of five teenagers from Queensland, Australia. In true YouTube fashion, the original video was then turned into a follow-up video by a YouTube comedian named Filthy Frank. The videos last between thirty and thirty-four seconds featuring the house music song “Harlem Shake” by Baauer.
The principle of CBA, Kevin Guerrero, states that the school doesn’t have anything against the song or the video; but administrators felt the lack of clothing and gyrations from some students were extremely inappropriate.
Many students and parents are upset over the punishments. Some felt they were not deserved, others felt they were too harsh. Each student received the same term; 2 days of school suspension.
One source spoke with me regarding the situation; these are her thoughts on the CBA “Harlem Shake” video.
When I read the story last night at first I was like hmmm suspension over a prank video, but then I actually watched it & my mouth dropped in shock. Ok now I see they deserved the punishment for sure!
These obviously immature kids are in high school, yet darn sure old enough to know better. Much less to do it on school property & post it under a CBA alias on YouTube when the school has set policies on Social Media.
Some people don't think this is a big deal, but my nieces go there, as well as a few friends’ kids go there.
It is embarrassing to the school, the admins & the kids' parents. This is a Christian Academy & the parents of these kids & the general public would be mad as hell if it were the teachers doing something like that! They would be calling for people to be fired. Suspension...a fair punishment I think.
