article imageBundesliga: Matchday 22 Roundup — Bayern continues to dominate

By Karl Gotthardt     Feb 16, 2013 in Sports
Dortmund - FC Bayern continues its run for the championship with a dominating lead over its opponents. The lead seems almost insurmountable for defending champion Dortmund and third place contender Bayer Leverkusen.
Bayern, Dortmund and Leverkusen maintained their top three spots with wins on matchday 22. Of the three matches Dortmund put on the spectacular performance without their striker Robert Lewandowski. Marco Reus made history as the first German to score a hat trick among the top five European leagues. Bayern Muenchen solidified its top spot with a 15 point lead.
VFL Wolfsburg vs FC Bayern Muenchen 0-2
FC Bayern extended its dominating lead in Germany's top flight with a 2-0 win over Wolfsburg with goals by Mandzukic and Robben. The win extends Bayern's lead to 18 points over defending champion Borussia Dortmund, pending tomorrow's results. Wolfsburg started the match with strong offensive play and created a few scoring opportunities along the way. Their vigorous engagement created some good scoring opportunities and at times prevented the record champion from developing their game plan. After Mandzukic's dream goal in the 36th minute Bayern started to dominate the game completely.
Mainz 05 vs Schalke 04 2-2
Schalke and Mainz exchanged blows with goals by Ivanshchitz in the 27th minute for Mainz and the equalizer by Bastos in the 41st minute for a 1-1 halftime draw. Pospech got the go ahead goal for Mainz in the 63rd minute, but Basto with the second of the afternoon managed the equalizer in the 82nd minute. The 2-2 draw moved Mainz into seventh spot, while Schalke moved up into 8th.
Hamburger SV vs Borussia MoenchenGladbach 1-0
Van der Vaarts lone goal in the 24th minute gave Hamburg the 1-0 victory, which left the team in contention for an Euro League spot next season. While Hamburg dominated for about 60 minutes of the match and Gladbach appeared a little stronger for the last 30, Hamburg was able to take away three points on its early goal. The goal came as a result of a defensive error by Gladbach's Xhaka. Van der Vaart found himself 25 meters in front of Gladbach's goal and fired a powerful shot into the right corner of the net for the winner. Gladbach dropped to ninth spot, four points short of a Euro League berth.
Werder Bremen vs SC Freiburg 2-3
Freiburg won an important away game in the Weser Stadion in Bremen. In match filled with action and five goals, Freiburg walked away with a 3-2 win. The quality of the match was apparent with the number of times the teams hit goal posts and crossbars, three for Bremen and and two for Freiburg. Kruse got the first goal for Freiburg in the 36th minute, but Bremen was not long to equalize, when Petersen hit the net in the 39th minute for a 1-1 tie at half time. Caliguri put Freiburg ahead in the 54th minute and Petesen got his second of the afternoon in the 65th minute. Ginter put the finishing touch on the game in the 71st minute for the Freiburg win. Freiburg remains in fifth place and Bremen remains in 11th.
Leverkusen vs FC Augsburg 2-1
Leverkusen kept pace with league leader FC Bayern by defeating FC Augsburg in a tightly contested match. Despite the teams occupying opposite ends of the Bundesliga table, the match was not a roll over for the Leverkusen side. Unfortunately Augsburg seldom capitalized on the few opportunities near the Leverkusen goal. Leverkusen optically was the better team, but only had a few scoring opportunities more than the Bavarians. Augsburg's keeper Manninger made some fantastic saves. Leverkusen led at half time with Kiessling's goal in the 26th minute. This was Kiessling's 15th goal on the season. Lars Bender scored in the 75th minute, which turned out to be the game winner. Moelders scored Augsburg's only goal in the 89th minute for a final score of 2-1 for Leverkusen. Leverkusen remains among the top three, while Augsburg slips into 17th spot.
Fortuna Duesseldorf vs Greuther Fuerth 1-0
Greuther Fuerth is still chasing its third win in its debut season in the Bundesliga. The taillight of the league, lost a tear jerker against a visibly stronger Duesseldorf side. Bellinghausen scored the winning goal for Duesseldorf in the 18th minute and had to worry about throwing the win away for the remaining 72 minutes. Fuerth's hopes for a second season in the Bundesliga are vanishing with each matchday as the team is 13 points off to move out of the relegation zone. Duesseldorf has moved up into 12th spot with an 11 point cushion from the relegation zone.
Borussia Dortmund vs Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0
Despite the absence of Robert Lewandowski, who was suspended due to last weekends red card, Dortmund put on a display of offensive soccer, second to none. Goetze and Reus kept stirring it up in the Frankfurt penalty area and Marco Reus completed a double pack in the first half with goals in the eighth and tenth minute. Schieber's second yellow card in the 31st minute left the defending champion shorthanded. This had a minor impact and Dortmund carried the 2-0 lead into halftime. Reus' hat trick was complete in the 65th minute when he scored Dortmund's third goal of the evening. Frankfurt's Inui received his second yellow in the 74th minute, balancing the two sides with ten players.
Two matches are on tab for Sunday with Nuernberg hosting Hannover and Hoffenheim taking on VFB Stuttgart. GOLTV Canada will carry a live broadcast of the Hoffenheim vs Stuttgart game at 11:25 EST.
1. FC Nuernberg vs Hannover 96 2-2
An injury time goal ensured Nuernberg one point in this closely contested game. Hannover's Huszti scored the opening goal of the match four minutes short of halftime, giving Hannover the 1-0 half time lead. Nuernberg was clearly the better team during the first 30 minutes of the match, but Hannover found it's rhythm late in the half to take the half time lead. Nuernberg's Klose got the equalizer in the 53rd minute, but 15 minutes later Ya Konan once again put Hannover ahead in the 68th minute. Hannover held on to its lead to the completion of regular time, but Nuernberg bounced back with the equalizer two minutes into injury time to edge the 2-2 draw.
1899 Hoffenheim vs VFB Stuttgart 0-1
Stuttgart ended its losing streak of five and collected its first three points since the winter break. Harnik's goal in the third minute guaranteed the victory. While the match was balanced for the most part, Stuttgart was more goal oriented and efficient, while Hoffenheim did not use the few scoring opportunities. For Hoffenheim it was the 14th defeat this season and the club remains in 16th spot, separated by ten points from the rest of the pack. Stuttgart's victory moves the Schwaben into 12th place with 28 points, six short of a Euro League spot.
