article imageVideo: Syrian soldiers break from war to dance to Usher's 'Yeah!'

A YouTube clip presents one of the more bizarre sights to have emerged from the Syrian war. It shows a group of Syrian soldiers in full combat gear, wielding automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades dancing to R&B star Usher's hit tune "Yeah!"
The clip filmed in southern Syrian was obtained from Ugarit News. According to The Associated Press, it appears authentic based on the evidence of weapons and uniforms of the soldiers consistent with those worn by Syrian soldiers.
The contrasts in the scene create a macabre effect. With smoke rising from ruined buildings in the background, rough, unshaven men bob and bounce in unison to American R&B music. They rise to their feet, form a ring and shuffle past the camera singing along. But watch their faces closely, the grins look forced. Not the smiles of genuinely happy men indulging in a moment of spontaneous expression.
Toward the end of the video, the men stop dancing and break into the well known battle chant "With our souls, blood, we sacrifice for you Bashar!" Smoke billows from a building in the background as they shoot bursts of automatic gunfire in the air.

The sudden transformation of benignly smiling and dancing soldiers into battle-hardened killers chanting a blood pledge completes the reality of their war scarred lives.

The video has appeared on both pro-regime and anti-regime YouTube channels, The Associated Press reports.
The combination of war and modern Internet technology regularly yields unpredictably bizarre effects.
