Greenville - A 3-year-old boy was shot to death in a Greenville, South Carolina apartment Friday evening in what police are calling a tragic accident.
Tmorej Smith died from a gunshot wound to the head. The toddler was pronounced dead at 7:37 p.m. at Cross Pointe in the Haywood Apartments off Haywood Road.
Greenville County deputy coroner Jeff Fowler ruled the shooting an accident, while not divulging whether the toddler shot himself or if someone else killed him. His parents, grandparents and 7-year-old sister reportedly live in the same apartment; according to GreenvilleOnline, the grandparents and sister were home at the time of the deadly accident.
Tmorej is the latest in a string of young children to be shot to death in the United States in 2013. The victims include:
On January 23, 4-year-old Jamarcus Allen of Akron, Ohio was accidentally shot while riding in his father's car. Terrance Allen, 48, was arrested and charged with manslaughter in connection with his son's death.
On January 21, Maximillian Walters, 5, was shot and killed by his father, Las Vegas Metro Police Lieutenant Hans Pieter Walters, in Boulder City, Nevada. Walters then killed his wife and himself.
On January 19, 15-year-old New Mexico boy Nehemiah Griego shot and killed five family members, including siblings Zephania, 10; Jael, 5 and Angelina, 2, in their Albuquerque home.
Also on January 19, 6-year-old Navaeh Benson of Cleveland, Ohio accidentally shot herself in the face.
On January 10, Trinity Ross, 4, of Kansas City, Missouri was accidentally shot dead by her 6-year-old brother.
On January 4, 6-month-old Jonah Mendoza of Ocala, Florida was shot and killed by his mother Melanie Reyes, who turned the gun on herself and died days later.
