The Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins, St. Louis Blues, Buffalo Sabres, Florida Panthers and New York Islanders were all victorious in Thursday's early games.
Toronto Maple Leafs, 3 - Washington Capitals, 2
The Toronto Maple Leafs scored their first home victory of the season with a 3-2 victory over the slumping Washington Capitals.
James van Riemsdyk scored his fourth of the season, Nikolai Kulemin had his first and Matt Frattin notched his fourth goal in as many games to give the Buds the W.
Joel Ward and Alex Ovechkin replied for the visitors, goaltender Michael Neuvirth made 37 saves in the loss.
Pittsburgh Penguins, 3 - New York Rangers, 0
Evgeni Malkin had a goal and an assist while Tomas Vokoun made 22 saves for his first shutout as a Penguin to lead Pittsburgh past the New York Rangers 3-0.
Rookie defenseman Simon Depres also had a goal and an assist, James Neal had the other goal while Sidney Crosby had one assist.
St. Louis Blues, 4 - Columbus Blue Jackets, 1
The St. Louis Blues continued their impressive start to the season with a 4-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Blues jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period on goals by Barret Jackman, Patrik Berglund and impressive rookie Vladimir Tarasenko and never looked back adding only an insurance goal into the empty net by David Backes.
Derrick Brassard had the only goal for Columbus while Steve Mason made 13 saves in relief.
Buffalo Sabres, 7 - Boston Bruins, 4
Thomas Vanek had his second, five point game of the young season to lead the Sabres to a 7-4 trouncing of the Boston Bruins.
Vanek had three goals and two assists putting his point total at a league leading 15 on the season.
Tyler Ennis, Alexander Sulzer, Cody Hodgson and Jason Pominville also scored for the Sabres.
Brad Marchand scored a pair for Boston with the other two goals coming from Rich Peverly and David Krejci.
Florida Panthers, 6 - Winnipeg Jets, 3
The Florida Panthers scored four times in the final ten minutes of the third period to claim a 6-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets.
Tomas Fleischmann had three assists, Tomas Kopecky had a goal and two assists and much maligned forward Alex Kovalev had the winning goal for the Cats.
Peter Mueller, Jonathan Huberdeau, Brian Campbell and Kris Versteeg also scored for Florida.
Grant Clitsome, Olli Jokinen and Tobias Enstrom scored for Winnipeg who fall to 3-2-1.
New York Islanders, 5 - New Jersey Devils, 4 (OT)
The New York Islanders continued their surprising run with a 5-4 overtime victory over the New Jersey Devils.
John Tavares had two goals and an assist, with Brad Boyes chipping in an assist and the overtime winner.
Mark Streit and Keith Aucoin also scored for the Islanders who improved to 4-2-1 on the season.
Steve Bernier, Adam Henrique, Henrik Tallinder and Ryan Carter all had their first goals of the season in the loss.
