Jackson - A dog in Jackson, Tennessee is scheduled to be euthanized on Thursday after the owner surrendered the animal because it was "gay".
The adult male American Bulldog was surrendered to officials at Jackson Madison Rabies Control after the owner saw the the dog "hunching" another male dog.
According to the Examiner, the owner believes the dog's behavior means the animal is gay and he "refuses to have a gay dog".
David S. Spiegel, a veterinarian who specializes in behavioral veterinary medicine, says dogs under the age of one-year-old who have not been spayed or neutered will "hump" other dogs in a "sexual nature". However, older dogs, especially those who have been spayed or neutered, use the "humping' behavior as a sign of dominance.
Pets.ca also states that the behavior is a show of dominance, saying:
"A dog will only tolerate this mounting behavior if he/she views that the dog doing the mounting is above him/her in rank. This subordinate dog can be of either sex, which is why it is not uncommon to see a male dog humping another male dog."
The incident has sparked outrage by animal advocates and the dog's story quickly began to spread throughout Facebook. Many who have heard of the situation are questioning the intelligence and sanity of the former owner.
As news of the dog's predicament began to spread nationwide, Sharron Smith with Chicago's Furever Rescue saw the dog's story and decided to help. On Wednesday evening, the rescue committed to contacting Jackson Madison Rabies Control to have a hold placed on the animal until a local rescue can pick up the dog Thursday and arrange transport to Chicago.
