article imageThe Gemma McCluskie murder trial verdict

By Alexander Baron     Jan 30, 2013 in Crime
The brother of former soap actress Gemma McCluskie has been given a life sentence after being found guilty of her murder. He will serve a minimum of 20 years.
The murder of Gemma McCluskie has been covered here earlier. Today, we can say it is no longer an alleged murder as her 35 year old brother Tony has been convicted at the Central Criminal Court.
Gemma McCluskie was born at Shoreditch, London, on February 5, 1983, making her a true East Ender, something that stood her in good stead in the latter part of her short life when she appeared in over 40 episodes of the BBC soap opera East Enders, a series that over the years has seen the odd murder or several, but few as odd and none so tragic as that of Gemma.
In March last year, shortly after the photograph below was taken, she was struck over the head and killed by her own brother. Exactly what happened and why we will never know, it is quite possible that Tony McCluskie doesn't know either, because he was an habitual user of skunk, a particularly strong form of cannabis that is known to cause memory loss among its other undesirable side-effects.

His version of events - for what it is worth - can be found in the BBC's latest report.
Whether or not his sister actually came at him with a knife, and regardless of how stoned he was, he retained enough self-control to dismember her body and dispose of it in a fairly competent manner. In an earlier era he might have gotten away with it, but not, thankfully, in the age of CCTV.
Gemma's father spoke outside the court after the conviction of his son for the murder of his daughter. At times like this, the family of a murder victim will often thank those responsible for bringing the accused to justice, which he did, but for him especially this is a double tragedy.
The photograph of Tony McCluskie below was released by the Metropolitan Police; the eyes in particular are telling. Tonight he is spending his first night behind bars as a convicted murderer. Although he was convicted by a majority verdict of 11-1, there is no indication as yet if he will appeal. In view of the strength of the case against him, any such appeal, if it materialises, will almost certainly be academic.
