West Palm Beach - Amid allegations of procuring underage prostitutes in the Dominican Republic, the FBI has now raided the offices of a Doctor linked to the Democrat senator.
An ongoing investigation by the FBI has led to an overnight raid on the offices of Dr. Salomon Meglen in Florida. Agents with the Miami field office descended onto the West Palm Beach office of the Vitreo-Retinal Consultants Eye Center.
The Miami Herald reports that despite the fact that Salomon Melgen makes regular donations to various politicians, the Dominican-born eye doctor has not paid his taxes, owing millions of dollars to the IRS.
The special agents with the FBI converged on the offices of the doctor closely linked to Senator Bob Menendez late Tuesday night, and worked until early Wednesday morning. The agents took out several boxes of potential evidence.
According to the Miami Herald, Salomon Melgen and his family have contributed over $300,000 to many politicians, including Menendez, as well as Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the Chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee. Melgen is also the owner of a CL-600 Challenger plane through one of his companies based in Miami.
Despite his apparent wealth and donations there is currently an $11.1 million lien against Melgen's property for back taxes from 2006 until 2009. A prior lien against Salomon Melgen's Palm Beach home for $6.2 million was lifted in 2011.
Digital Journal reported over the weekend that leaked emails, provided to the Daily Caller, that revealed a federal investigation had been launched against Bob Menendez, concerning allegations that while on a trip with Dr. Salomon Melgen in the Dominican Republic, the Democrat Senator procured two prostitutes, one of them underage.
Senator Harry Reid responded to the allegations, chalking it up to a right wing smear job.
“Always consider the source. All anyone here has to look at is the source where this comes from.” Sen. Harry Reid stated.
An anonymous employee speaking to Channel 5 in Florida defended the doctor.
"Dr. Melgen is too much of a smart and caring person to be involved with such nonsense as prostitution, I think it was one of those campaign smear tactics, and as far as the IRS? I have no clue about that. And yes he is a good person to work for. It can be stressful at times but that's because he has such a large practice."
Senator Bob Menendez has denied that he is involved with prostitution.
