A rookie math teacher at a Colorado high school has been placed on administrative leave after an anonymous tipster alerted a local TV news station about sex- and drug-themed tweets she sent.
NBC 9 reports that 23-year-old Carly McKinney, a math teacher at Overland High School in Aurora, tweeted semi-naked photos of herself as well as images of apparent drug use and numerous messages about being high from her CarlyCrunkBear (@crunk_bear) account.
One photo shows the first-year teacher smoking what appears to be a joint (which is actually now legal in Colorado). One tweet said, "Naked. Wet. Stoned." Another read, "Watching a drug bust go down in the parking lot. It's funny cuz I have weed in my car in the staff parking lot." Another refers to a male student as "jailbait." Yet another says she's "baked as shit grading papers."
When contacted by NBC 9, McKinney claimed that @crunk_bear was a parody account and that the provocative tweets had been sent out without her consent by a friend. That seems unlikely, as a week before the account was shut down, McKinney tweeted, "Local news station just called me... Tweeking out."
Cherry Creek School District officials have placed McKinney on administrative leave while they determine whether she will be allowed back in the classroom.
Meanwhile, Overland High students have rallied behind their teacher. A #freecrunkbear campaign has been launched, and many teens are voicing their support for McKinney.
"It's a teacher that's only 5 or 6 years older than our oldest students, so we kind of relate to her on a personal level," an Overland Park student named Shaun told NBC 9.
