Phoenix - After more than 10 years, movie star and box office powerhouse Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has climbed to the top of the mountain and defeated CM Punk for the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) championship Sunday at the Royal Rumble.
For the first time since losing the WWE title to Brock Lesnar in 2002 at SummerSlam, The Rock is once again the WWE Champion by beating Punk with his famous “People’s Elbow” finisher, after being decimated by the three-man faction The Shield.
With Sunday’s win, The Rock is now an eight-time WWE Champion.
The Rock first made his emphatic return in Feb. 2011 when he announced he would be the host of WrestleMania XXVII. His confrontation with superstar John Cena led to his match in the main event of WrestleMania XXVIII, in which he was the victor. The next night on Monday Night Raw, The Rock vowed to once again become champion.
During the flagship show’s 1,000th episode this past summer, The Rock confirmed he would face the champion at the Royal Rumble. Punk, who was champion for 434 days and has the sixth-longest reign as champion in history, was able to hold onto the title and clash with the Brahma Bull.
Punk seemed to have control of the match. After The Shield interfered and triple powerbombed The Rock through a table, Punk took advantage and pinned The Great One for the 1-2-3. Immediately after, Vince McMahon announced he would be stripped of the title due to interference, but The Rock wanted to finish the match and take the championship from Punk.
After a couple of minutes, a spinebuster and “the most electrifying move in sports and entertainment,” The Rock won.
It is now expected that The Rock will face John Cena, who won the Royal Rumble on Sunday night, at WrestleMania XXIX on Apr. 7 at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey in a rematch that was billed last year as “Once in a Lifetime.”
The next PPV is Elimination Chamber that will be held on Feb. 17.
On top of becoming champion, The Rock has 10 motion pictures in the making, post-production or completion stages and is doing promotional work for his action film “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.”
