article image'Super-Mayor' Corey Booker saves dog from freezing

By Greta McClain     Jan 27, 2013 in Travel
Newark - Newark, New Jersey's "Super-Mayor", Cory Booker, has saved yet another life, this time saving a freezing dog stranded in front of its home.
Mayor Booker has become well known for going above and beyond the call of duty to help his constituents. Shortly after Superstorm Sandy ripped through parts of New Jersey, Digital Journal reported Booker opened his home to residents telling them to "come by and relax". He even had food delivered to those who took him up on his offer.
In April of last year, Booker rushed into a burning home and saved a woman trapped inside. In June, he stopped to assist a pedestrian hit by a car until medical crews arrived at the scene.
On Thursday, WABC-TV reporter, Toni Yates, saw a dog stranded outside it's home, shivering in the frigid winter weather. After checking on the dog throughout the evening and finding it still outside, Yates tweeted Mayor Booker and notified him of the situation. Booker immediately responded, saying:
"I'll head up myself & investigate."

According to People Pets, Booker, along with police, arrived at the scene less than an hour later. They found the dog still outside, shaking from the cold. Booker approached the freezing pooch, picked him up and loaded him into the back of a police car to warm up.
Booker told WABC:
"This is brutal weather, this dog is shaking really bad and you just can't leave your dogs out here on a day like this and go away and expect them to be ok. Hypothermia on any animal including a human animal will set in pretty quickly. So this is very sad, you can just feel the dog shaking pretty badly."
Police contacted the dogs owner, Moises Rodriguez, and told him that leaving the dog outside in freezing conditions was unexceptionable. A NewsOne report says Rodriguez apologized and did not realize the dog had managed to get outside. He went on to say he believed the dog managed to get out of the front door as Rodriguez was loading his car.
