article imageReview: Daniel Botelho uses underwater photos to spread love of the sea

By Greta McClain     Jan 26, 2013 in Arts
Rio De Janeiro - Managing to get the perfect angle and lighting for a great photo is difficult enough, but add the fact the photographer must fight waves and ocean currents to capture the image of an unpredictable and moving wild animal, that takes remarkable skill.
Remarkable skill and an eye for the spectacular describes photographer Daniel Botelho perfectly. Botelho specializes in underwater photography. He gets his love of nature from his childhood, growing up in Rio de Janeiro. With the nearby ocean and rainforest as his inspiration, he quickly developed a phenomenal eye for the perfect nature photo.
Seeing what was happening to the earth's oceans through unsustainable fishing practices, he became an activist for whales and sharks. Using the camera lens to capture these majestic creatures while there is still time, Botelho hopes to open the eyes of the world to the plight of these and many of earth's other endangered creatures. The heartfelt passion he has for his work is perhaps most evident when he says:
"It is not about the eyes, camera or lenses; I take photos with my heart. I am in love with the subjects I capture and I want to spread that love through my images. Help me spread the love, it’s the only way to save our seas. Respect and love the oceans!"
Botelho's images have appeared not only in dive media, but in mainstream media as well. He has been featured in publications such as The Guardian and on Yahoo!. He was recently named one of five underwater photographers to watch in 2013 by Dive Photo Guide, who say:
"We fully expect Daniel to build on his momentum and produce even more spectacular big animal imagery in 2013. "
One would be hard pressed to see Botelho's images and not feel at least some of the emotion he feels for these magnificent animals. While everyone may not be as moved as Botelho, most people can agree that his photos of these creatures, and other wildlife as well, is truly amazing.
