Prince, the artist formerly known as a few different names, is back. Fans will be pleased to know that he has a new website, and song, but is the new song any good?.
"Screwdriver~ is the latest recording by Prince. His new website is called
20princ3.com. Hardly a name that trips
lightly off the tongue.
Prince is known to have a love of quirky names, and was once called a 'symbol'. A relatively new Twitter account
3rdeyegirl posted a link and uploaded the footage to the Prince website.
Controversy has surrounded the identity of
3rdeyegirl, igniting publicity. There is quite a bit of interest on Youtube regarding 3rdeyegirl. Rumour has it that 3rdeyegirl is Prince's latest backing group. three females, of course. Could it all just be a publicity campaign? Whatever it is Prince has been drawing media attention.
The diminutive artist, with a huge amount of talent, and an even bigger ego, has been out of the 'limelight' for some time. Will 'Screwdriver' relight his career?
It is catchy with pop undertones but a driving guitar and a quirkiness that could guarantee a hit. It is not a potential classic, such as Purple Rain, but after one listen we were 'hooked'. The catchiest line,
'I'm your driver, you're my screw' is bound to cause at least some offence.
By the end of the track boredom set it in though, but, if you like your music hard driving and repetitive, it may appeal. The guitar work is the best aspect of 'Screwdriver'. Watch the Youtube footage and share your thoughts.
Does 'Screwdriver' 'do it for you?'.
On May 19 Prince will receive the Billboard Icon Award at the Billboard Music
Awards.
