Fashion Designer Oscar de la Renta announced Friday he had invited John Galliano to return to the fashion world. Galliano was fired from Christian Dior following an anti-Semitic rant, which was caught on video.
Galliano was fired from Dior on March 1, 2011. On September 8, 2011, Galliano stood before a French court and admitted to being an alcoholic. He apologized for his behavior, but said he had no recollection of acting that way. He was ordered to pay $8,400 in fines.
Many within the fashion industry believed Galliano would never return to fashion in any capacity, but he has been invited to with Oscar de la Renta in De la Renta'a New York studio, Women's Wear Daily reports.
"John and I known each other for many years and I am a great admirer of his talent," de la Renta said. "He has worked long and hard on his recovery and I happy to give him the opportunity to re-immerse himself in the world of fashion and re-acclimate in an environment where he has to be has to be creative."
The Anti Defamation League said in a statement Friday that it welcomes Mr. De la Renta's decision to invite John Galliano to stay with him.
"We believe individuals can change their hearts and minds as long as they demonstrate true contrition," ADL Nation Director, Abraham H. Foxman, said
"I said and did things with hurt others, especially members of the Jewish community. I have expressed my sorrow privately and publicly for the pain which I caused, I continue to do so. I remain to making amends to those I have I hurt."
Galliano and de la Renta living together is believed to be the "beginning of a comeback" for Galliano, The Guardian reports. He is expected to reveal his new collectio at New York Fashion Week in February.
It is unclear what role, if any, Galliano will be in de la Renta's business, The AP reports.
