Bessemer City - Two North Carolina high school students allegedly used Facebook in an attempt to extort money from a school bus driver they had sex with.
The Gaston Gazette reports that the two male Bessemer City High School students used Facebook to try to force 33-year-old Kwanda Carpenter, a bus driver with whom the boys allegedly had a sexual relationship, to pay them $60 to keep quiet about it.
The alleged sex did not occur at the school, but rather in Carpenter's car on a dead-end road near the boys' homes.
Carpenter, who is married, allegedly complained to a school resource officer about the private message the boys had sent her, according to Gaston County Police Sgt. Josh Hamlin.
"The students sent her a Facebook message trying to extort money from her for not reporting the sexual contact," Hamlin told the Gazette. "This is the first time where I've had alleged victims try to blackmail the subject," he added.
Both teens, now 17, had previously been charged with blackmail.
Carpenter was arrested and booked into Gaston County Jail on Wednesday. She is being charged with two counts of sexual activity with a student by school personnel other than a teacher. Bond has been set at $5,000. She has also been suspended from her job pending a school system investigation.
While male teachers and school employees frequently engage in illicit sexual relationships with female students, it is far less common for female educators and school workers to get caught in such relations with boys. But it does happen-- so far this year, three female teachers have been accused of having sex with underage male students.
Kinsley Wentzky, a married 34-year-old English teacher at Dreher High School in Columbia, South Carolina has been arrested and charged with having sex with two boys.
Kristina Ngum, 43, a cheerleading coach and exceptional children's teacher at Myers Park High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, allegedly had sex with one of her students.
And 40-year-old Stephanie Raleen Forbes, a former performing arts teacher at Clear Creek High School in League City, Texas, faces sex crimes charges for allegedly having an improper relationship with a student.
