article imageJake Gyllenhaal's life-changing experiences making 'End Of Watch' Special

By Earl Dittman     Jan 17, 2013 in Entertainment
Immersing himself in the role of a LAPD officer, Gyllenhaal would spend five months training and riding along with real cops. His time spent with them not only informed his performance, but it also had an emotionally transformative effect on the actor.
In his latest film, End Of Watch, Jake Gyllenhaal portrays a Los Angeles police officer who must patrol the dangerous and crime-infested neighborhoods of the City of Angels. During the course of performing his daily duties to serve and protect, the young cop unearths a secret that makes he and his partner the targets of the country's most dangerous drug cartel. To prepare for his role as Officer Brian Taylor in the gripping David Ayer-directed cop drama, Gyllenhaal not only enrolled in fight and weapons training courses at a local police academy, but he also went on ride-a-longs with actual law enforcement officers. According to the Oscar-nominated actor – who shaved off all of his hair for the role – spending time with members of LA's finest would prove to be a life-changing experience that not only greatly influenced his performance but it also had a profound effect on his psyche.

"For me, doing End Of Watch was a lot about the journey," the 32-year-old Gyllenhaal confesses. "I spent five months preparing for the movie, and I was on ride-a-longs two or three times a week with LAPD and the sheriff’s department. Then, we were doing tactical training, two times a week, with live ammunition. We were also in fight training every single morning, so everything was more of an internal journey for me. I don’t really pay much attention to the external in a world when you’re dealing with people being killed."
On Gyllenhaal's inaugural ride-a-long with a pair of LA-area cops, he witnessed, first-hand, the horrifying violence that takes place daily on the streets of Los Angeles county. "The first ride-a-long I went on someone was murdered, right in front of me," he says somberly. "I was at Inglewood PD, and there was a gang shooting. We responded to a call. There was a drug war between a dealer and some other guy. A guy was walking down the street and he shot the guy who was driving the car out of his driveway. We were the second car on the scene. It was gang-related. Consequently, after that, for two or three times a week, when you spend time with police officers from four p.m. to four a.m., you see a lot of different things happen."

While he often found himself in the middle of several precarious circumstances, Gyllenhaal admits he still felt protected. "I did feel safe...well, yes and no," he says with a laugh. "Look, I was the probably the safest you could be, but at the same time, I was at the forefront of the danger. There were moments in the process where I was definitely afraid, but ultimately, I had learned tactics if anything were to have happened. I was in safe hands. They took care of us. You have two actors in the back of a car. It was an added responsibility for the police who are trying to do their jobs, and both Mike (co-star Michael Peña) and I were aware of that the whole time."

Although his and Peña's safety – and often their very own lives – were in the hands of the officers whom they rode along with, Gyllenhaal explains that many of the law enforcement departments they worked with were well-accustomed to sending out actors alongside their patrol officers to allow them to research their roles. Jake cites director Antoine Fuqua's critically-acclaimed, award-winning film Training Day (which was written by End Of Watch helmsman David Ayer) as a perfect example of the willingness of the police to lend a hand to Hollywood productions.

"I think they’ve probably dealt with this genre many times," he says of the various LA county police departments the film collaborated with. "Because of their relationship with our director, David (Ayer), we got a look on the inside. We spent five months with them on ride-a-longs, and that is just David’s style. So, there wasn’t really any discussion whether this movie was going to go one way or the other, they sort of trusted if David was making it, that it would be authentic and true to life."

Even before garnering an Academy Award-nomination in the mid-'90s for Brokeback Mountain, Gyllenhaal was a well-known, recognizable face to movie-going audiences across the globe. However, when he rode along with patrolling law enforcement officers, Jake had few fans approaching him for autographs or asking if they could take snapshots with him. "When you’re dealing with situations like this, no-one cared who you are and where you are," he asserts. "No-one paid attention." Gyllenhaal insists he was particularly oblivious to the trappings of his own celebrity status while spending intense hours and hours riding in police cruisers. "I was thinking about other things," he admits. "Being famous is not really on my mind all that often – which may come as a surprise."

A native Angelino, Gyllenhaal confesses that life in the California metropolis has indeed become more complex and perilous than during his formative years. "I grew up in Los Angeles not seeing any kind of violence like this, but also in a way not seeing this type of culture," he admits. "South East LA is full of incredible culture, and maybe five per cent of this is violent, and the other ninety-five per cent is full of strong families, beautiful food…all of that changed my life."

Additionally, his time riding along with members of the various law enforcement departments in and around the Los Angeles area altered his perception of the police, and the men and women inside the cop cars. "Now, when I see a police car drive by I think about the relationship inside that car," Jake admits. "You don’t recognize that any situation can turn into something and you could be that situation. Sometimes, when you meet a police officer, they come to your house and there’s a certain attitude, they are focused on anything that could happen. Granted, I was in South Central Los Angeles, but I would be with them and a call – which could be totally iniquitous – could suddenly turn violent. You would never have thought, so...
"Most of all, my performance was about doing service to them – to what they go through on a daily basis," he quickly interjects. "It was about that internal ride for me and making those relationships. I have, consequently, made some of the closest relationships in my life so far. Two or three of the guys we worked with, I can say, are my closest friends at this point."

Making End Of Watch had the unintentional but positive effect of simply reinforcing Jake's own personal feelings and views towards brotherhood and male-to-male relationships. "First of all, it made me really appreciate the sense of humor I have with my (male) friends," he says of his participation in the film. "I have friends from the movies I make, but my closest friends are from childhood. My best friends in the world, we express our love for each other through a whole lot of piss taking. I think that’s what this movie conveys. Luckily, I was working with Michael Peña, an actor who is incredibly funny."

Written and directed by David Ayer, the riveting, action-packed End Of Watch features Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña as Officers Brian Taylor and Mike Zavala. In their mission to abide by their oath to serve and protect, the law enforcement partners have formed a powerful brotherhood to ensure they both go home at the end of each watch. But nothing can prepare them for the violent backlash that happens after they pull over the members of a notorious drug cartel for a routine traffic stop. Shot from the point of view of the officers, gang members, surveillance cameras, dash cams and citizens caught in the line of fire, a 360° perspective creates a gritty, compassionate and intense portrait of the city's darkest streets, and the brave men and women patrolling them. End Of Watch uses gritty handheld footage to create a powerful story of family, friendship, honor and courage.
After Gyllenhaal had finished filming End Of Watch, he came to the surprising revelation that it had been an easier experience than the months he spent riding along with the police. "You know, the making of the movie was a lot less intense than the preparation," he laughingly admits. "And, we shot it in twenty-two days. It's the shortest film I have ever shot in my life. In the shoot-outs, we had been training with live ammunition, and when we filmed the shoot-outs we had blanks. The gun just doesn’t shoot the same way. It was a strange feeling that David immersed us in – this real world – and we had been trained as a police officer and, all of a sudden, you’re faking it for a movie, it was strange."

In End Of Watch, Jake – the son of director Stephen Gyllenhaal (Paris Trout, Losing Isaiah) and producer/screenwriter Naomi Foner (Losing Isaiah, Bee Season) and the brother of actress Maggie Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko, The Dark Knight) – filmed many of the scenes used in the movie with his own handheld camera. It was an experience Gyllenhaal thoroughly enjoyed and one he is very proud of. "Some of the stuff I did is in the film, but I didn’t film any of the shaky parts," he jokingly insists. "I loved being a part of filming things. Usually, as an actor, you’re just in front of the camera, but in this case it was about documenting it and being a part of that journey – which was fun. I find myself, as an actor, not really paying too much attention to myself. I usually pay attention to the actor I’m working with. I love actors. I love watching them work. I love seeing somebody just kill it. It’s the biggest joy that I have. I got to capture it here. In my family, my dad was never in any of the pictures, because he was always taking them. I was that guy on this."
Since producing and directing is part of the family business for Jake, does he harbor any aspirations of becoming a motion picture director in the near future? "I'd love to, if I have the privilege to do that, one day," he answers earnestly. "I hope so."

Since the premiere of End Of Watch at the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) this past fall, Gyllenhaal has garnered wide industry accolades and international critical acclaim for his compelling performance. While he is clearly pleased with the reaction he and the film have received, kudos and talk of nominations don’t even enter into his thoughts when he watches End Of Watch. “To me, when I see the movie, I see five months of my life of being involved in something that I love and I care about,” Gyllenhaal confesses. “Right now, in my life, my focus is my work. That’s what matters to me more than anything. That is what excites me more than anything… the results of that are whatever the

results of that are. The process of doing my work has been such a huge life-changing thing. This movie was a different approach to making a movie than I’ve ever done. That’s all that is really on my mind.”

The Skinny
The Skinny, the latest film from Patrik-Ian Polk, director of Sundance favorite Punks and creator of Logo's popular series Noah's Arc and the award-winning film Noah's Arc: Jumping the Broom. The Skinny is a sharply-scripted comedy about a group of four young black gay men and their lesbian best friend. They arrange to meet up in New York City one year after their graduation from Brown University. Their plans for a weekend of fun start off well, relaxed in each other's company as only old friends can be. But old tensions quickly resurface. Drinking, drugs, hidden desire and the demands of promiscuity put friendship, trust and even lives at risk. The film had its world premiere at the Outfest Fusion Film Festival in March, where Polk received the 2012 Fusion Achievement Award from filmmaker Lee Daniels, before embarking on a successful theatrical release across the United States. Polk is currently in pre-production on his next film, a coming-of-age drama set in Mississippi based on the novel Blackbird by Larry Duplechan.
