Toronto - A Canadian student group is hosting what they're billing as an "epic sex club adventure" to promote Sexual Awareness Week.
The University of Toronto Sexual Education Center (SEC) is marking Sexual Awareness Week by hosting a January 21 'SAW Sexy Social' at Oasis Aqua Lounge, a downtown Toronto "water-themed adult playground."
Just don't call it an orgy.
"Our executive director made it very clear that this is not an orgy, we're not funding an orgy," SEC external education and outreach coordinator Dylan Tower told the Toronto Star. "People are allowed to have sex on premise... there is not any type of 'You should be having sex when you're here.' It's very much, come and enjoy the space, there's no prodding or pushing in that direction."
Students will be asked to keep their clothes on at the event until 7 p.m., after which time "the party becomes clothing-optional so you can get naked with all your new friends," Tower said.
While couples normally pay $80 to enter Oasis Aqua Lounge, SEC rented the venue and is charging students only $5 cover. SEC will provide a "myriad of safer-sex supplies" and will have volunteers monitoring the venue to "make sure everyone is respectful and having the best experience Oasis has to offer."
The Star described Oasis as "four storeys of easy-to-clean surfaces, with sanitizing wipes, baskets of condoms, and lots of places to mingle, including the back of a hippie van and a heated pool."
When they're not hosting "epic sex club adventures," SEC's mission is fostering a sex-positive attitude among the university community. The group offers safer-sex supplies, information, programming and counseling in a "welcoming environment." Other Sexual Awareness Week activities will include a talk on sex positivity, an interactive sex toy demonstration and an afternoon of pornography, according to the Star.
So, what does the University of Toronto make of the SEC event?
"The University will not attempt to censor, control or interfere with any group on the basis of its philosophy, beliefs, interests or opinions expressed," the school said in an e-mail statement to the Star, "unless and until these lead to activities which are illegal or which infringe the rights and freedoms."
Unique, provocative and interactive sex education events are by no means exclusive to the University of Toronto. In an educational live sex act performed before a human sexuality class at Northwestern University in Chicago in 2011, a woman was brought to orgasm by a dildo-tipped power tool known as a "fucksaw." That didn't go down too well in prudish America, especially since the mother of one of the students saw the unorthodox lesson along with her kid.
