article imageOp-Ed: Protect schools by protecting gun rights

By Eric Morales     Jan 15, 2013 in Politics
Americans must ask themselves, exactly how many more civil liberties they want to cede to the government. Generation 9/11 is quickly becoming the generation of less freedom.
Do you know the first instance of a recorded school shooting in American history? Before today I didn't either. According to the book, Never Come to Peace Again: Pontiac's Uprising and the Fate of the British Empire in North America, the first school shooting on record was in the 1700's. Between nine and ten children, along with their schoolmaster Enoch Brown were killed by four Lenape American Indians, on July 26th 1764.
This was two decades before the second amendment was ever ratified. The violence then is incomparable to today, however the point is, there has always been gun violence and that violence has affected our schools, before people in this country even had the right to bear arms.
Whether it is 25-year-old Charles Whitman killing 16 at the University of Texas-Austin in 1966 or, Sandy Hook Elementary School, nothing has changed, the government is incapable of outlawing evil, it can only try to combat it.
In fact our founding fathers intended for the American people to be on the front lines of defending civil society. The Pennsylvania State Constitution of 1776, which gives insight into the thinking of those drafting our Constitution at the time asserted that, "the people have a right to bear arms for the defense of themselves and the state."
The purpose of giving Americans the right to bear arms was multi-faceted. It included the desire to deter a tyrannical government, repelling an invasion, suppressing an insurrection, protecting oneself, participating in law enforcement, and enabling people to form a civil militia.
How does the average American citizen protect themselves from the dangers of terrorism, civil disorder, or crime without a gun? The right to bear arms is just a natural right as life itself. So it should be no surprise that the party who is anti-life and has defended abortion, is now trying to take away the right to bear arms. Leaving American citizens naked in their defense of their homes, schools, and businesses.
