Stockholm - A Swedish cleaning lady stole an empty commuter train from a local train depot and drove it to a suburb of Stockholm. The train then derailed and crashed into an apartment building.
Apparently the woman was the only one injured in the crash, which happened early on Tuesday morning. She has been flown to a Stockholm hospital, where she is in a serious condition.
Tomas Hedenius, a spokesman for Arriva who operate the train, said that the woman, born in 1990, stole the four-car train at the depot outside Stockholm, drove it for around a mile (1.6 km) to the last station on the railway line. At that stage, the train jumped off the tracks, skidded for around 30 yards (25m) before finally crashing into a three-story apartment building.
From the video, the crumpled front car of the train can be seen, buried deep into the building.
"There were three families inside the apartment building, but no one was injured. At least not physically," Hedenius said.
According to Hedenius, it is unclear how she got the keys for the train. He did state that driving it was not very complicated.
"Generally speaking that's possible even if you're not a train driver," he said. "You can read about it on the Internet, or observe how others do it."
At present, the unnamed women's motive is not clear, and apparently she worked for a company contracted to clean for the train operator.
"We have only heard good things about her. We're investigating how this could happen, and why she did what she did," he added.
Police spokesman Lars Bystrom said the woman was arrested on suspicion of endangering the public.
