While only a freshman United States Senator, Republican Scott Brown of Massachusetts only served for a short time. After Senator Edward β€œTed” Kennedy (D-MA) had passed away, a special election was held to replace him. It was Brown that emerged victorious; but, that US Senate seat would turn blue again with the victory of Elizabeth Warren. This was deemed a brutal campaign fight in the 2012 US Election cycle. So far, there might be a chance that Brown could get back into the US Senate. This is because US President Barack Obama has nominated Senator John Kerry (D-MA) to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton as the US Secretary of State. Retired Representative Barney Frank (D-MA) is interested in being a temporary replacement for Kerry until a special election is held. When that time comes, Brown might have his shot at returning.
However, that might not be the case. CNN reports that Brown is currently undecided at the moment. According to a source close to Brown, he seems to be waiting for the vacancy to actually happen. The person that does win the special election has to run again come 2014. Despite losing, there is still a favorable opinion of Brown. However, there are people that do not hold a high opinion of him. One such example is John Walsh who is the chairman of the Massachusetts Democratic National Committee (DNC). To Walsh, Brown is a β€œfaker.” Regardless, people still hold high opinions of Brown.
There is the possibility that Scott might not run for the US Senate. According to reports, Broww might take a run at the position of Massachusetts state Governor. Politico reports that running for the Senate again, let alone run in the special election, might not be in the best interests of Brown's political career. If he ran and won the special election only to lose in 2014, it would be painful for Brown.
Lawrence O'Donnell, a contributor to MSNBC, had choice words to say about Brown. First, he started off by comparing Brown's campaign to the thugs of his old Boston neighborhood. O'Donnell said that Brown might have a better chance to run for governor when Duval Patrick (D) leaves office in 2014. He said that Brown might love to be governor more than being a US Senator.
The Atlantic Wire reports on the reasons Brown has a better shot at running for governor than for the US Senate. The first reason is that Brown's chances are pretty good and that there are no other serious GOP contenders. Also, he is considered a friendly Republican in a state that is very much blue. It also made comparisons between Brown and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney as the latter ran against Democratic incumbent Barack Obama for the US Presidency. Between Brown and Romney, the former held various political offices as the latter dealt in private equity.
However, it's not known if Brown will actually run. It is unknown whether if Brown will decide to run in the special election later this year or for the position of Massachusetts state governor.
