A New Jersey teenager has been arrested and charged with attempted murder in connection with a shooting that seriously injured a young child.
Jose Rodriguez, 18, of North Plainfield was arrested in Piscataway. Rodriguez is accused of firing a gun on a busy street last Thursday. A bullet allegedly fired from his gun struck 5-year-old Jasir Gibbson in the face as he walked with his mother, Shenta Ford, on Plainfield Avenue at Second Street.
"He was walking from school, just wanted to get him a Reese's cup and they started shooting and I moved him," Ford told CBS New York.
The bullet struck Gibson in his mouth and lodged in his throat. The child was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he is listed in critical but stable condition.
Police have not said what they believe motivated the suspect's actions. In addition to attempted murder, Rodriguez has been charged with weapons violations.
