Mogadishu - Somali militants belonging to Al-Shabab, today released photos of a dead French soldier. The soldier was killed in a failed rescue attempt of a French intelligence officer who has been held by the militants.
The militants originally claimed that they had captured the soldier, though it now seems that the soldier died in combat, with militants seizing the soldiers body.
The militants displayed the soldier alongside his gear and weapons, while also taunting the French President asking if it was "worth it".
As for the fate of the hostage, Denis Allex, the organisation said that they would release details about their decision regarding him in the next few hours. The French Defence Minister originally stated that they believed that he had been killed by the militants during the rescue operation.
The confirmed photos of the dead French commando, brings the casualty toll to two French soldiers now, with another French soldier being killed during the failed rescue attempt.
Al-Shabab's taunting and gory display of the French commando, may increase tension with France, and may draw retaliatory strikes, or similar operations to what we're currently seeing in Mali.
