Junior Seau, the NFL linebacker who committed suicide last May, was suffering with brain trauma according to new evidence released this month.
In May 2012 NFL legend Junior Seau was found dead from apparent suicide, as the Digital Journal reported. The reasons for his suicide were never made clear.
Junior Seau had a twenty season NFL career, playing for the San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins, and New England Patriots.
However, what has emerged almost eight months later is that Junior Seau’s brain showed abnormalities consistent with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative disease associated with repetitive head injuries. This finding comes from a study conducted by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH).
CTE is a concern for several sports. It is normally associated with individuals who have suffered repeated concussions or similar head injuries, according to The Scientist. CTE is associated with dementia, memory loss, aggression, confusion, and depression. These conditions can occur months or years after the injuries have occurred.
The study was supported by Gina Seau, Junior’s wife. She told CBS News that: "t was important to us to get to the bottom of this, the truth and now that it has been conclusively determined from every expert that he had obviously had it, CTE, we just hope it is taken more seriously. You can't deny it exists, and it is hard to deny there is a link between head trauma and CTE.”
In the same interview, Seau's son Tyler said: "“I was not surprised after learning a little about CTE that he had it. I was more just kind of angry I didn't do something more and have the awareness to help him more, and now it is too late. I don't think any of us were aware of the side effects that could be going on with head trauma until he passed away.”
According to The Guardian it is likely that legal action will be taken against the NFL by Seau's family and it is possible that this will be the first of several high profile cases.
