Rod Shepherd spoke with me on the phone this afternoon and took some time out of his very busy schedule to answer a few questions about his new found fame from this video posted to YouTube by Danfi Parker.
He tells me the gentlemen in the video all returned to the Tim Hortons
in Oakville today to meet up with a film crew (he didn't know which station) and record 3 songs for them only to find 4 stations present when they arrived, a complete surprise to the Capella 4 part harmony group from the Oakville Chapter of The Entertainers
Very humbly, Mr. Shepherd also says, " We are not even good, there are many in our chapter much better, I don't understand all the interest". He tells me, "The Northern Lights in Toronto are much better and win lots of competitions", but it is his group that is winning hearts and interest from all over Canada and beyond right now, with articles and videos in CBC news
, the Huffington Post
and the Toronto Star
to name just a few.
According to Rod Shepherd the group practices every Monday in the auditorium of the Syl Apps Centre, a minimum security jail, after which for the past 2 years they head to the Tim Hortons where they get a coffee and a donut and enjoy a little more fun singing. He says, "We were drinking coffee and eating donuts, the singing was not good."
If he gets anything out of the fame he does like it draws attention to the Barbershop Harmony Society,
of which he has been a part of since 1968. Mr. Shepherd went on to tell me much about their activities and popularity, he says they have 33,000 members and hold competitions all over the world, with this year scheduling the international competition, Toronto International
convention at the Air Canada Centre
in Toronto on July 1, 2013 .
Mr. Shepherd finished by saying, "I will bask in the sunshine today, and see what tomorrow brings."
