article imagePoll: Congress less popular than lice, cockroaches, Nickelback

By JohnThomas Didymus     Jan 9, 2013 in Odd News
A national poll by Public Policy Polling found that Congress has a 9 percent favorability rating with 85% of voters viewing it in negative light. PPP said: "... we decided to take a different approach and test Congress' popularity against 26 things."
PPP's poll ran the gamut of some of the most unpleasant and noisome things anyone can think of, from lice, used car salesmen, cockroaches and traffic jams to playground bullies, gonorrhea and Ebola virus, and found that Congress was less popular than the following:
Lice 67: Congress 19
Brussel sprouts 69: Congress 23
NFL replacement referees 56: Congress 29
Colonoscopies 58: Congress 31
Root canals 56: Congress 32
Used Car salesman 57: Congress 32
Traffic jams 56: Congress 34
France 46: Congress 37
Carnies 39: Congress 31
Nickelback 39: Congress 32
Genghis Khan 41: Congress 37
DC political pundits 37: Congress 34
Donald Trump 44: Congress 42
Cockroaches 45: Congress 43
It wasn't all bad news. Congress was able to beat the following in popularity rating:
Lindsey Lohan (45/41),
playground bullies (43/38),
telemarketers (45/35).
Kardashians (49/36),
John Edwards (45/29),
lobbyists (48/30),
Fidel Castro (54/32),
Gonorrhea (53/28),
Ebola virus (53/25),
Communism (57/23),
North Korea (61/26), and
meth labs (60/21)
Breitbart.com was skeptical of PPP's polling results, wondering: "What would you think the Democratic Party’s favorite Public Policy Polling (PPP) would find, if taking favorability ratings for Congress?"
The website reminds PPP that it left out "Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin, Mao Tse-tung, and Satan," and comments: "Obnoxious polls like this one are just the Democratic Party’s way of insinuating how simply wonderful and patient Obama is in working with an unpopular, recalcitrant Congress."
Breitbar.com asks cynically: "What would you think the chances would be of PPP asking if cockroaches were more likable than Obama?"
However, the poll results will not come as surprise to many Americans. Time reports that AP described the 112th Congress as “one of the least productive in more than 60 years.” The PPP survey attributed the low favorability rating of the Congress (9 percent) to the “historically unproductive 112th session and a series of last-minute showdowns over fiscal matters."
Public Policy Polling recommended that when you are less popular than lice, cockroaches and the Kardashians, "it might be time to reevaluate."
According to PPP, the poll was based on responses of 830 American voters from Jan. 3 to 6 through automated telephone interviews. The margin of error for the "apolitical and independently" funded survey was +/- 3.4 percentage points.
