article imageDon Cherry suggests $49.5 million Canadian aid to Haiti is 'nuts'

By Andrew Moran     Jan 8, 2013 in Politics
Ottawa - Don Cherry, the legendary hockey analyst for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, took to Twitter on Monday to voice his opposition to the Canadian government giving out $49.5 million in taxpayer money to the nation of Haiti as part of foreign aid.
The outspoken former hockey player and commentator is not only passionate about sports, but also about politics. This is why he vented on Twitter by publishing seven 140-character tweets that criticized Canada handing out money to a corrupt Haitian government, while there is a poverty issue in our own country.
“You know, I am one of those guys, like most people in Canada, we like to help the countries all over the world. But sometimes it makes you wonder. Maybe it's just me. But Canada gave Haiti 49.5 million dollars last year. Are we nuts?
“We've got a guy dying in Toronto waiting 3 hours for an ambulance. We got people waiting 7, 8 10 hours, if they're lucky in a waiting room with one doctor for a zillion people. We nickel and dime our doctors, nurses and veterans plus a million other services.
“Yet we can send almost 50 million to Haiti. I'll tell ya something. The working guy is getting kind of sick of people spending money like that. It's a good job we got a good guy like Julian Fantino, with a little common sense, in charge. 50 million, I wonder how much have we given them over the years? Lets smarten up. As the old saying goes, charity begins at home. Am I right or is it just me?”
Cherry’s comments, which went viral in a matter of minutes, were in response to a Canadian Press article that cited former Canadian Governor General Michaelle Jean taking exception to International Cooperation Minister Julian Fantino’s remarks over Haiti’s paucity of proper garbage clean-up.
Jean asked if “it gives them pleasure to live with this garbage?” She added that Fantino should now help Haiti with waste management. But this peeved Cherry and he had to “back him” because “he is one of us.”
The former Toronto Police Chief and Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner thanked Cherry by calling him “a great Canadian who wears his heart on his sleeve,” reports the QMI Agency.
Since 2006, the Canadian taxpayers have provided $1 billion to Haiti in the form of aid and despite the "disappointment" in “the lack of progress made,” Fantino confirmed that Canada “will never abandon the people of Haiti.”
The CBC hockey analyst’s comments happened less than week until the third anniversary of the massive earthquake that took place in Haiti, which left 300,000 people dead and more than 1.5 million homeless.
