Kosta Barjaba has been suspended as chief executive of the Socialist Party of Albania pending charges of burglary in a department store in Palo Alto.
The Statutory Guarantees Commission of the Albanian Socialist Party suspended Kosta Barjaba, 52, and his wife Fatbardha Barjaba, 52, after the pair were arrested in the U.S. on burglary charges, Top Channel reported.
According to Palo Alto Online the couple were arrested along with their daughter, Jonniada Barjaba, 23, for stealing goods from a Nordstrom store at the Stanford Shopping Center.
The three Albanians have been charged with burglary after allegedly stealing a bag of men's clothes and a purse valued at $238, and conspiracy to commit burglary. They are currently on bail.
Barjaba is a member of the Albanian Academy and dean at a private university in Albania, and acts as adviser to the Socialist leader Edi Rama on migration policy and welfare.
Kosta Barjaba's academic title has also been been frozen by the Academy of Sciences which said "that if the charges are proven, the act is shameful, unacceptable and against the academic moral."
