Sandra Palmer, 47, and her son Maurice Edmonds II, 14, were found dead
inside a townhouse near Piedmont Triad International Airport after a call alerting police to a shooting that occurred shortly before 8 a.m.
The slain boy's father, Maurice Eugene Edmonds, 46, and Palmer's daughter, 18-year-old Danielle Imani Jamison were also shot. Edmonds is in guarded condition at Jamison is listed in critical condition at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
Police are calling the shooting a domestic violence incident. The identity of the shooter, if known, has not been released, although police also say that no suspect is on the loose. A handgun and several spent shell casings were recovered from the crime scene.
Maurice Edmonds II
was a popular 8th grader at Northwest Guilford Middle School in Greensboro. The standout student excelled at four sports-- football, baseball, basketball and track.
"A rising star, certainly athletically and academically as well too, and socially," Northwest Guilford Middle School Principal Rich Thomae told WFMY. "He was just an incredible kid."
"I'll miss his smile, his laugh, everything about him," friend Daniel Estrada said. "He had a lot of jokes. He was really funny, really nice, and when he came to Northwest, everybody liked him."
Edmonds is at least the fourth child to be shot to death in the United States in 2013. On Sunday, 16-year-old Anna Karam
, who was 4 months pregnant, was shot and killed in Akron Ohio. Her friend, 19-year-old Jessica Halman, was shot in the head but survived.
Last Friday, Melanie Reyes of Ocala, Florida shot and killed her 6-month-old son Jonah Mendoza
before turning the gun on herself. She survived.
On January 3, 10-year-old Aaliyah Boyer
of Manheim, Pennsylvania was taken off life support and pronounced dead following a New Year's Eve accident in which she was shot in the head by celebratory gunfire.
Also on January 3, 16-year-old Shukur Brown turned himself in to police in Flint, Michigan after admitting to shooting and killing his best friend, 15-year-old Gianni Herron
, in a New Year's Eve accident.
