US Supreme Court to hear same-sex marriage arguments on March 26

On March 26 and 27, the United States Supreme Court will listen to arguments in regard to the Defense of Marriage Act and California's Proposition 8.

If you are an activist for the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community, then you may want to pay close attention to the dates of March 26 and March 27. It is reported that these are the two dates that the United States Supreme Court will listen to the oral arguments when it comes to same-sex marriage. The first case, known as Hollingsworth vs. Perry, focuses on the controversial Proposition 8 campaign, which barely passed back in 2008. The US Supreme Court will listen to the Hollingsworth vs. Perry argument on March 27. In 2008, this was one of the financially costliest campaigns in California. While the United States Presidential Elections were the biggest thing nationwide, the Proposition 8 campaign was the major campaign if you were a Californian or someone that identifies with the LGBT movement. Despite the unpopularity of Proposition 8, it managed to barely pass. However, that's not the only same-sex marriage case before the US Supreme Court. On March 27, the US Supreme Court will listen to United States vs. Windsor. This is in regards to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Under DOMA, same-sex married couples are denied the same federal benefits that heterosexual couples have. The argument is in connection to the recent New York court ruling that struck down that section. While there is growing support for same-sex marriage, there's still the issue of the two arguments. In the case of that issue, those two dates in March are the ones to pay attention to.
